- cutting out the daily commute
- being your own boss
- setting your own work hours
- having a small business overheads expense
- freedom time!
And these are just a few of the more common reasons and in some instances, perks of having your own home-based business. However, as this contributed article explains, there are some things that you can and others that you should not do as a home-based business. See how these home-based business tips might apply to your business.
Making Your Home-Based Business Seem Bigger Than It Is
One of the biggest problems that home-based businesses face upon their inception, and even during their fledgling startup stage, is the fact that they are not deemed big enough, and therefore not worthy enough, to do business with big customers. This, unfortunately, is just a cross that startup home-based businesses must bear.
But, there are ways for home-based business startups to move despite having to bear this cross. Yes, there are ways for your home-based business to in fact seem bigger than it actually is! To see just a few of these ways, make sure to read on.
Avoid Listing Your Residential Address As Your Business Address
Yes, even though your business is operating, trading and working from your place of residence, you should avoid listing your residential address as your business’s address. You should not do so, quite simply, because if your potential customers and clients see your business to be working from a residential address, they will take one look at it and run. Quite literally, they will run as far away from your business as they can, taking their business with them, in search of a far more genuine and bonafide business.
But, what address should you list as your business if you can’t list your residential one? Well, that’s where virtual offices come into play. What taking advantage of a virtual office would offer you is the chance to have your mail, and all other forms of correspondence sent to an ‘office space’ that has an address in an area that is synonymous with the world of business, such as Shoreditch or Canary Wharf in London.
The advantage of doing so is that your potential customers and clients will think that you are based in such an area, which will then, in turn, make them more likely to do business with you, when in fact you are sitting at home. And, fear not, the correspondence that is meant for you will not get stuck at the virtual office and will make it through to your letterbox eventually!
Use Large Invoice Numbers
When you begin to send out quotes and invoices to clients that you intend to do work for or have done work for, you should use high numbers. You should do so because it creates an illusion and an appearance that you have been in business much longer than you actually are, and creating an illusion, in this case, is pivotal in this sort of endeavor.
So, whenever you have the chance to do so, use a high invoice number.
Don’t Label Yourself As The CEO
Chances are, you don’t have a lot of employees working for you. And, thus, chances are that you have to do many jobs and fill many roles yourself, right? Well, if this is the case then you should not be labeling yourself as a CEO on your business cards or any other official business documentation.
Why? Well, because when your potential clients hear the CEO of a business answering the phones, for instance, they are instantly going to deduce that your business does not have a lot of employees. And, when they deduce this, it’s not a long jump for them to deduce that your business is not as big as you are making it out to be.
So, as tempting as it may be, don’t label yourself as the CEO!
Your home can be the perfect place to grow your business and make it bigger, but only if you are creating an illusion that your home-based business is bigger than it actually is whilst you do so. That is the only way you are going to attract any customers!
