Updated for 2026: Grammarly has changed considerably since I first reviewed it. What began primarily as a spelling and grammar checker has developed into a much broader AI-powered writing assistant. The paid plan once known as Grammarly Premium is now called Grammarly Pro, and Grammarly itself is now part of the Superhuman suite. If you write emails, blog posts, reports, school assignments, business documents or online content, you have probably come across Grammarly at some point. But with AI writing tools now everywhere, is Grammarly still useful? More importantly, is Grammarly Pro worth paying for in 2026 when the free version already does quite a lot? That is what we are going to look at in this updated Grammarly review.

What Is Grammarly?

Grammarly is an AI-powered writing assistant designed to help improve spelling, grammar, punctuation, clarity, tone and overall communication.

Years ago, Grammarly was mainly known as an online grammar checker. You typed something, Grammarly found errors, and you decided whether to accept its suggestions.

That basic function is still there, but the product has grown considerably.

Today Grammarly can help with tasks such as:

  • spelling and grammar corrections
  • punctuation
  • sentence clarity
  • tone suggestions
  • rewriting sentences and paragraphs
  • adjusting writing style
  • generating or improving text with AI
  • checking plagiarism on supported paid plans
  • AI-content detection
  • citation assistance
  • multilingual writing support
  • predicting how a reader may respond to your writing

Grammarly now describes itself as an AI writing and communication partner rather than simply a grammar checker, and that is a much more accurate description of what the product has become.

Grammarly Is Now Part of Superhuman

There has also been an important company change.

Grammarly was founded in 2009 by Max Lytvyn, Alex Shevchenko and Dmytro Lider. After expanding its products and acquiring Coda and Superhuman Mail, the company adopted the Superhuman name in 2025.

Grammarly itself has not disappeared. It remains one of the main products within the wider Superhuman productivity platform.

That distinction is worth knowing because you may increasingly see references to products such as Superhuman Go while using Grammarly.

Grammarly Free vs Grammarly Pro

One of Grammarly’s biggest advantages is that you do not have to pay before finding out whether you actually like it.

The free Grammarly plan provides core writing assistance and is enough for many occasional writers.

Grammarly Free

The free version can help you catch common writing mistakes and improve everyday communication. It is particularly useful for emails, social media posts, documents and basic blog writing.

For someone who mainly wants another pair of digital eyes checking spelling, grammar and tone, Grammarly Free may be all that is necessary.

Grammarly Pro

Grammarly Pro adds more advanced writing and AI capabilities. These are designed for people who write frequently or rely on written communication professionally.

Depending on the Grammarly product or writing environment you are using, Pro features can include advanced rewrites, additional AI assistance, plagiarism checking, AI detection and access to specialized AI writing agents.

The important point is that you do not need Grammarly Pro simply because the paid version exists.

If Grammarly Free solves your writing problems, stay with the free version. Upgrade when the additional tools begin saving enough time or improving enough of your work to justify the cost.

How Much Does Grammarly Pro Cost?

As of this 2026 update, Grammarly lists the following standard U.S. pricing for Grammarly Pro:

  • Monthly: $30 per month
  • Quarterly: $60 every three months
  • Annual: $144 per year, averaging $12 per month

Regional currencies and pricing may be displayed depending on where you live, so always check Grammarly’s current pricing page before purchasing.

The annual subscription is clearly the better value if you already know that you will use Grammarly regularly. However, paying for a full year makes little sense if you are still trying to decide whether the advanced features are useful to you.

What I Like About Grammarly

1. It Works While You Write

One of Grammarly’s strongest features has always been convenience.

Instead of finishing an entire document and then running it through a separate grammar checker, Grammarly can offer suggestions while you are writing.

That makes it useful for everyday communication such as email, Google Docs, Microsoft Word and browser-based writing.

2. The Free Version Is Actually Useful

This matters.

Many software products technically offer a free version but remove so many useful features that the product is little more than an advertisement for the paid plan.

Grammarly Free can genuinely be useful on its own.

If your main goal is catching embarrassing spelling mistakes, grammar problems and awkward sentences before hitting Publish or Send, start there.

3. Grammarly Goes Beyond Spelling

A spell-checker may tell you that a word is incorrect.

Grammarly tries to go further by looking at the way sentences are written and suggesting improvements to clarity, tone and structure.

For business communication, that can be particularly useful.

An email can be grammatically perfect and still sound abrupt, confusing or unnecessarily complicated. Grammarly’s tone and rewriting tools are intended to help with those situations.

4. The AI Tools Can Speed Up Editing

Grammarly now includes far more artificial-intelligence functionality than it did when this review was originally written.

Its tools can help brainstorm, rewrite passages, adjust tone, paraphrase text and improve existing drafts.

Grammarly also offers specialized AI agents for tasks such as proofreading, paraphrasing and evaluating how an intended reader may respond to your writing.

These tools can save considerable editing time when used carefully.

5. It Can Help Non-Native English Writers

Grammarly has long been useful for people writing in English as an additional language, but its usefulness is certainly not restricted to them.

Native English speakers make mistakes too.

And more importantly, knowing English does not automatically make every sentence we write clear, concise or professional.

Grammarly now also provides writing support in more than 20 languages, making the product considerably more multilingual than its earlier versions.

What I Don’t Like About Grammarly

No automated writing tool should be treated as perfect.

1. Grammarly Can Be Wrong

This may be the most important point in this review.

A Grammarly suggestion is a suggestion.

It is not an order.

Sometimes the wording you chose is better than Grammarly’s proposed replacement. Creative writing, conversational language, humor, deliberate sentence fragments and personal writing styles can all cause automated writing tools to make unnecessary suggestions.

Use your own judgment before accepting changes.

2. Too Many Suggestions Can Remove Your Personality

Writing does not have to sound perfect to sound good.

In fact, accepting every automated suggestion can sometimes make writing feel polished but lifeless.

This is especially important for bloggers, creators and small business owners whose personal voice is part of their brand.

Use Grammarly to clean up your writing – not to erase your personality.

3. Grammarly Pro Is Not Cheap

A $30 monthly subscription is significant if you only write occasionally.

Someone writing every day for work may easily justify the cost. Someone who writes one or two documents each month probably cannot.

This is why I recommend starting with Grammarly Free before paying for Pro.

4. AI Features Still Need Human Judgment

Grammarly has become significantly more powerful because of AI, but powerful software can still misunderstand context, introduce wording you would never use or change the meaning of a sentence.

You remain the editor.

That rule applies to Grammarly just as it does to ChatGPT and other AI writing tools.

Grammarly’s Plagiarism and AI Detection Tools

Grammarly’s paid offerings also include originality tools in supported environments.

The plagiarism checker compares writing against online, academic and other published sources to identify potentially matching passages.

Grammarly also provides AI detection designed to estimate whether sections of text may have been written or modified by generative AI tools.

These features may be useful for students, educators, publishers and professional writers, although AI detection results from any provider should be interpreted cautiously rather than treated as unquestionable proof.

Where Can You Use Grammarly?

Grammarly is no longer confined to one online editor.

It can work across a variety of writing environments, including supported web browsers, Google Docs, Microsoft Word, desktop applications and email.

For example, Grammarly’s browser extension can provide writing suggestions directly inside Google Docs.

Grammarly also provides desktop software for Windows and Mac designed to bring writing assistance into supported applications without constantly copying and pasting text into another website.

Who Is Grammarly Best For?

I would consider Grammarly particularly useful for:

  • Bloggers who publish regularly
  • Freelance writers editing client work
  • Business owners writing emails, proposals and website content
  • Content creators preparing scripts, descriptions and posts
  • Students working on essays and assignments
  • Professionals who communicate extensively through email
  • Non-native English writers wanting additional writing support
  • Anyone prone to overlooking mistakes when proofreading their own work

Who Probably Does Not Need Grammarly Pro?

You probably do not need the paid version if you:

  • only write occasionally
  • mainly need basic spelling and grammar checking
  • are satisfied with Grammarly Free
  • already use another editing tool that meets your needs
  • would rarely use the advanced AI, rewriting or originality features

There is nothing wrong with using Grammarly Free indefinitely.

My Experience With Grammarly

I originally reviewed Grammarly many years ago when the product was considerably simpler.

At the time, I was testing the free Grammarly software myself and liked seeing problems highlighted while I wrote. Even as a native English speaker, I found having that additional layer of proofreading useful.

The Grammarly available today is almost a different product.

Grammar correction remains at its core, but AI-powered rewriting, tone assistance, plagiarism checking, AI detection, multilingual support and specialized writing agents have transformed Grammarly into a much broader writing platform.

That added power does not mean you should automatically accept everything Grammarly suggests.

I would use Grammarly in exactly the same way I use any good editing tool: let it find things I may have missed, then make the final decision myself.

Is Grammarly Worth It in 2026?

Grammarly Free? Yes. It is easy to recommend trying because there is no subscription required to discover whether it improves your writing workflow.

Grammarly Pro? That depends on how much you write.

If writing is part of your business, education or daily professional life, the advanced features may save enough time to justify paying for them.

If you simply want help catching basic mistakes, start with the free version and keep your money until you have a reason to upgrade.

Grammarly Review 2026 – Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Useful free plan
  • Real-time spelling and grammar assistance
  • Clarity and tone suggestions
  • Sentence and paragraph rewriting
  • Generative AI writing assistance
  • Works across many common writing environments
  • Multilingual support
  • Plagiarism and AI-detection tools available with supported paid offerings
  • Suitable for beginners and experienced writers

Cons

  • Pro can be expensive for occasional writers
  • Not every suggestion improves the writing
  • Accepting too many automated changes can weaken your natural voice
  • AI-generated rewrites still require careful checking
  • Some advanced features depend on your plan and the writing environment you are using

Final Verdict – Is Grammarly Legit?

Yes. Grammarly is legitimate.

It has also become far more capable than the grammar checker I originally reviewed.

My rating for Grammarly in 2026 is:

4.5 out of 5

The strongest reason to recommend Grammarly is actually its free plan.

You can try the basic writing assistance without paying anything and decide for yourself whether Grammarly fits the way you work.

If you later find yourself wanting the advanced rewriting, AI and originality features frequently enough, then Grammarly Pro becomes much easier to justify.

    1. Hello there, Dylan.
Thanks for stopping by. Yes, I am basically new to Grammarly, but I am loving it so far! It does make me more aware of tiny bits of information that I might have ordinarily overlooked. Good luck to you.

  1. I came across grammarly whilst using Facebook and installed the plug-in in my web browser. I find this to be a very useful tool as it’s so easy to make errors in spelling, especially when typing fast!! I too like the colour coded system as you can see where errors are at a glance. Thanks for the review Michelle. It’s great to know that this product is highly recommended!!

    1. Hello there, Jacqueline.
Thanks for stopping by. Yes, I love Grammarly – it’s like my online school teacher – always ‘checking’ me out! LOL
It is indeed a great tool to have in your arsenal once you have decided to ‘voice your opinions’ in literary form for the whole world to see!
I am glad that my review was able to help you in some way.
      Much success.

  2. Hi Michelle,

This is something that I would find very useful. Actually, more than that, this is something that I need. My computer is set to Spanish and so when I am writing, it underlines nearly everything as an error. Checking the document manually is quite painstaking and so the fact that Grammarly uses colour co-ordinated warnings would be really useful for me.

    Many thanks

    Sean

    1. Hello Sean,
Thanks for stopping by my cyberspace. I am happy that you found the article useful. It is my goal to provide information that can be effective and indeed useful to my visitors. I have been using Grammarly for a while now and I find that it keeps me on my ‘literary toes’ – if I may.
      LOL
You should give it a try indeed. It might help save you some time as you compose your writing projects. Good luck and much success.

  3. I was purusing around on your website and this review caught my eye. Oh, I remember those days when the English teacher would put little red marks on my paper for incorrect grammar usage. Lol! I don’t miss those days! But it’s really helpful to know that Grammarly can help make our writing the “star of the show.” I’m a newbie at blogging so this could be very helpful. I do want to have that perfect post one day! By the way, I think your writing is fabulous. I think you have something to do with that! : )

    1. Hello there Cindy!
Thanks for stopping by my cyberspace and taking the time to voice your thoughts. Yes, I too remember those teacher-red-ink-days in school. What a colorful moment on some pages! LOL

Yes, Grammarly is somewhat now my online yellow, red and green color teacher! The good news is that I can erase those marks! LOL

Thanks for your compliment, I appreciate it. I enjoy putting my thoughts on paper…even more when I can find others to enjoy reading it!
Good luck to you in whatever you endeavor.

  4. Thanks Michelle, I can see this as a real time saver as well. I am constantly checking and rechecking to make sure what I write is grammatically correct. I spend way too much time rewriting and correcting myself. Free is always great. It’s nice to try before you by. Thanks for your research and honest review.

    1. Hello Joe,
Thank for stopping by. I am happy that my review provided a source of information for you…and better still, for the price that we all love!
      FREE!
Grammarly has made my writing skills shine much better. It keeps me on my toes, or should I say my fingers! It surely reduces my mistake-factor and improves my reader appreciation. Give them a try, I am sure you will be happy you did.
      Good luck.
      Michelle

  5. I have heard of grammarly and was searching to see what else I can find before I actually use it. Your post really tells me this is good program to use and I will have to check it out more. The prices seem pretty reasonable too especially now that they have a sale on.

    Thanks for you post!
    Grace

    1. Hello Grace,

Thanks for spending some time on my site. I appreciate your ‘eye-time’.

Yes, I have been using Grammarly for a while now and I am very happy with the software. It is indeed a way for me to ‘dot all my i’s and cross all my t’s’. I have become more aware of the reader’s perception and I make the effort to be grammatically corrrect – especially with the aid of Grammarly.

Yes, the price is great and so is the sale that they are promoting. You should give the free service a try and see if you like it before diving into full purchase.
      Good luck.

      Michelle

  6. Michelle,

Thank you for this thorough review of Grammarly. I’ve been trying to decide if it was something that I wanted to invest in. In my case the cons, make me say, “no.” I spend about 90% of my time writing using my iPad. I also tend to blog using ordinary speech patterns as if I was carrying on a face to face conversation. You have saved me money! Thank you!

    1. Hello Sondra,

      Thanks for stopping by.

Wow, you spend 90% of your time writing on your iPad…wow. You must have a keyboard attachment? Otherwise, for me, the iPad keyboard does not appear to be user-friendly for my fingers. 🙂

Yes, Grammarly can sometimes be arduous once you ‘start talking conversationally’…it gets a bit finicky! 🙂

In any event, I appreciate your honest feedback. Feel free to stop by anytime.
      Much success on your blog.
      Michelle

  7. Hi Michelle
Many thanks for your interesting post about Grammarly.
    You are obviously a convert!
As an English Teacher I have prided myself that my English grammar is up to scratch, well it certainly should be!! But now I think that I will give the free trial a go to see if Grammarly agrees with me!!
Very many thanks for bringing it to my attention.
    Chrissie 🙂

    1. Hello there Chrissie,

      Thanks for stopping by.

Aha, an English teacher…I better be on my Ps and Qs…lol. Yes, I am a Grammarly convert, thus far. I have found it to be great tool. And anyone will benefit from using it. By all means, give it a try, you lose nothing from the experience. It might even teach you a few new things – you know how this world changes every day! 🙂

      Good luck.

      Michelle

  8. Odd Helge Hveding

    Hi,
this sounds like an interesting program. I’m not a native English speaker (or writer) and I do use some time to check my grammar, spelling and more. Readers are supposed to understand what we write, so maybe this will help.

I wonder, do you download it to a specific computer and how about tablets? You mentioned it is not mobile user-friendly, does that also include tablets?

Hope to hear from you. oh, by the way. Nice site, thank you 🙂

    Odd Helge

    1. Hello Odd Helge,

Thanks for stopping by my cyber home. 🙂

Yes, Grammarly is a great tool, in my opinion thus far. And yes, it can be time-consuming when we have to make the effort to check and double check any writing material that we produce – we have to think of our readers, indeed!

Grammarly is an online and offline tool. You have to download it to your computer. It is not mobile-friendly, however, it works somewhat. I use it mainly on my laptop as I do not do any writing on my iPad…too small a screen for me…and my fingers need more room to play:)

Thanks for your compliment on my site. Please stop by again. Good luck with Grammarly if you decide to give it a try.

      Much success,
      Michelle

  9. Hi Michelle thanks for the insight into Grammarly I had been told to check this out by a friend who had been reading my posts on my website. He mentioned it’s a great tool and will help me improve the quality of my posts. I am new to this game and I have never been that good at writing, but really want to make a go of it. I have reread my posts over and over but it’s amazing how much you just don’t see. I can imagine this will be an awesome tool for me. Looking forward to giving it a go, thanks again.

    1. Hello Graham,
      Thanks for visiting.

Yes, I used to be just like you – wanting to give writing a go and worrying about my writing skills. I am still like you – giving writing a shot, however, with the help of Grammarly. It really is an awesome tool for writers, and even for those who do not ‘write’ for anything other than the usual stuff! LOL

You really should give it a try and by all means, let me know how it works out for you.
      Michelle
