If you’re starting an online store, then you need to know where you’re losing customers. You can accomplish this by using any abandoned shopping cart app that can be connected to your store. One of the heartbreaking truths that many customers learn is that they’re losing customers right at the moment that they should have them most ready to spend: when they have already got items in their digital shopping cart.
So, what can you do to stop shopping cart abandonment and encourage your shoppers to take that little extra step?
Sometimes, all they need is a reminder
People shop online all the time now. They could be doing it right before dinner, during a work break, or even on the train. For that reason, sometimes people simply quit out of a window and forget about it. To that end, you should make sure that you have reminder emails set up to send out after someone has left their shopping cart full and just need to confirm the purchase. It’s a good way to get in their inbox and remind them of your store, regardless, too.
Streamline the checkout process
If it’s not an accidental abandonment, then you need to look at the reasons your checkout process might be turning your potential customers away. An overlong checkout process can be a major hassle. You can shorten it in a variety of ways, but allowing for one-click purchases, speeding up logins and account creation, and so on.
But even if your checkout process is a little longer, adding breadcrumb navigation to the site can help it feel like it’s not taking as long. As long as people have an idea of when they’re going to be able to close the transaction, they might be willing to hang on a for a little longer.
You don’t offer easy payments
People are going to be picky about their transaction methods online. They may have some methods they trust more than others, some they don’t use, and so on. To that end, make sure that you have the most popular transaction methods available and integrated with ease. You can integrate payments with your shopping cart with a merchant account that accepts card details. You may also want to look at setting up accounts with payment platforms like PayPal, as a growing share of customers likes to use them as well.
Be flexible with any costs you add
You’re likely to have some shipping costs and to have customers take some of the brunt of these costs. There may be other service costs that come with the transaction as well. Most customers accept these costs as a part of life.
However, you should aim to inform them about these costs and their overall total as quickly as possible. If it seems like you’re withholding information or not being clear about additional costs until the very last second, you can very much lose any hope you had of converting some customers.
Abandoned shopping carts are going to happen. You’re not going to be able to stop 100% of them. You can, however, make sure that you’re fighting against them by looking at the causes and ensuring you’re taking steps to solve them.
