For that very reason, unless their previous career is going to work for them, many moms are taking control and making their own careers and businesses that they can run from the comfort of their own homes. It can be a big step that can feel quite daunting, but if you’re determined to make it work then working it around your child can be the most rewarding.

If you’re not sure what ideas could work or how to get started in the first place, then here are some ideas to help you get started and make it all run smoothly from the start – introducing the home based business guide.

Business Plan

Whatever route you choose to go down, you need to have a plan in place to make sure that you know what your goals are. Planning who your target audience is, how you will advertise and market what you do, as well as how much you will need to charge to make it worth it, all needs to be noted down.

If you have quite a costly product or service, then you need to know that you’ll have enough customers or clients, and even then, how much will you charge to cover the costs? A stellar business plan is what you need to know and have in place to make things run smoothly.

Financing

All businesses are likely to have some startup costs; no matter how small. But for businesses that have quite a large startup cost, such as the ones where you will need inventory for supplies, you may need to look into some financing to get things off the ground.

But with a good business plan, then you will know what you need and then you can calculate how much you need to pay back and when. If you haven’t had the best luck in the past with credit, then the good news is that there are places where you can get finance with no credit check, so they could be worth having a look at.

As long as you’ve got a plan to pay the money back each month, then it could be the thing that you need to get the business off the ground and get things started. So make a list of what the costs will be, whether just a new laptop or some specific equipment, and then you can go from there.

Sell Online

One way to make money can be selling things online. Of course, you can start with your own things that you no longer need, but you will swiftly run out when that is the case. So it is a good idea think about what you could create to sell on, or what you think would sell well if you were to buy wholesale and then sell for a higher price.

You could use sites like eBay and Etsy for things like that, but you will need to take into account the listing costs and the fee that these kinds of sites take from your sales. If you wanted, you could even create your own site or sell through channels like Instagram if you want to expand and create a brand around your business.

Work Freelance

Because so much of the world is online at the moment, there are so many jobs that can be done as a freelancer, so you could start a freelance business for all sorts of different things. If you haven’t got particular training in something specific, then you could look to do things like freelance copywriting, social media management or working as a virtual assistant.

If you have experience or qualifications in something from your previous career, you could work freelance in that. For example, if you worked as an accountant before, you could do some freelance accounting work or bookkeeping for small businesses.

The hard part is getting clients, but once you’ve got some, then you can go from there and it is all good. Again, work out how much you need to charge to cover costs and then you can go from there. The good thing with freelance, though, is that you can really be flexible with it as you can work the hours that you want, as long as the work gets done.

Blogging

If you have the flexibility to not be earning the big bucks right away, then blogging can be a great option for you. You can write when you’re able to around your children, as well as honing your skills through things like photography as you go about your day.

When you have built up a bit of a following, through a blog and social channels, brands are much more likely to want to work with you through sponsored content, as well as various forms of advertising. You could even earn through affiliate marketing, especially if you are a fashion or beauty blogger, where the content is very visual.

Monetize A Hobby

If these suggestions above are just not sounding like they will work for you, then think about a hobby that you have and what you enjoy. Depending on the hobbies that you have, you could look to monetize a hobby instead.

If you are a keen yogi, for instance, then could you do your formal yoga training and then do yoga lessons around your family. If it is something that you love then it can be really easy to be passionate about it.

Do you enjoy cooking or baking? How about selling what you cook or bake, for instance? You could even run courses or write an ebook that you could sell online. There are plenty of different options to choose from when you think about it and break down the options that you have.

I hope this home based business guide will give you a good starting point and here’s to your success in whatever you choose!

    Hi Michelle,
I agree, there are many ways to start a home business.
We’re very near retirement and needed to start making a supplementary income, so I decided to start my very own affiliate marketing business, online. It takes a lot of work and patience in the beginning, but when it finally takes off, it’s so worth it.
I was so thankful when I found Wealthy Affiliate. They taught me everything I needed to find success.
    Cheers,
    Suzanne
