Make Your Passion Your Project

You’ve heard the old saying “if you’re doing something you love you’ll never work a day in your life.” Well, it really does seem to be true. Ideally, you’d have some kind of experience in what it is that you decide to do, but passion goes a long way.

Set Up Properly

You may not be renting out an office space just yet, but it’s crucial that you create a space where you will enjoy working. Grab a desk, a lamp and other materials so you can set up a real work space in your home. Creating an area that is separate to your socializing space can boost productivity.

Get Guidance

Don’t be afraid to ask for help – you may have a friend or an ex-colleague who has done something similar in their time. Getting knowledge from people who have already trodden this path before can be incredibly valuable.

And people usually love to tell their stories! Now isn’t the time to be shy.

Outsource

You don’t need to be an expert just yet – utilizing the knowledge of paid professionals is a sensible step to take. Work out what is in your area of expertise and what isn’t. Whether it’s understanding tax credits or setting up a website, sometimes it’s best to leave it to the professionals.

Market Yourself

When you’re starting out on your own, you’ll have to work hard to sell yourself. You have to remember: just because they don’t know who you are yet doesn’t mean that they shouldn’t.

To get your name out there, consider different channels that you can tap into. Is it social media, a new website, or is it joining networking groups where you can meet potential clients?

Be Strict

As your own boss, you can set the rules. A huge bonus of working is enjoying a work/life balance. Make sure you set out your working hours and stick to them. So, if it’s a 9-5, don’t be tempted to work late into the night as it will impact the next day. It’s a marathon, not a sprint.

Look After Yourself

Succeeding will be incredibly hard if you’re working yourself to the bone. Make sure to look after your physical and mental health – you’re your most important product. Keeping your body has loads of health benefits, but it’s great for your mind, too.

Checking-in with family and friends is equally essential – sharing your experiences and talking through problems is great for taking the strain off. It is a milestone achievment to work for yourself, take the plunge and enjoy the efforts of your committment.
