change in professions

A Change In Professions Might Be Your Answer!

If you have been in the job market for some time, then maybe a change in professions might be something of interest to you at this point in your professional life. You might be suffering from boredom, burn-out, low salary, obnoxious workers, and the list could go on and on.

Well, this contributed article should help you get your ‘ducks in a row’ as you plan your next move.

A Change In Careers Might Be Just The Thing You Need!

It’s tragic just how common it is for so many of us to end up working a job that we hate. When you’re young, the world seems like it’s at your fingertips and all you need to do is reach out and grab it. There are so many options, and you just need to find the one that makes you happy.

Sadly, as you get older, life and responsibility start to get in the way. You might start off by taking a less than exciting job just to get by and over time find yourself getting trapped in it. There really is nothing worse than realizing you are sinking years of your life into a job that means nothing to you and leaves you feeling totally unfulfilled.

The problem is that many people have, is trying to figure out what it is that they would rather be doing. After all, it’s easy to say what you don’t want, it’s a lot harder to be able to properly identify what it is that you do want from a career.

To be able to find a job you really want, you need to be able to answer these simple questions when it comes to a change in professions.

What Actually Makes You Happy?

These questions might be simple, but they are most certainly not going to be easy. As obvious as it might sound, the truth is that the idea of what makes someone happy is a pretty challenging concept.

Figuring out what makes you happy may take time, but if you want to find a career that you’ll love, it will probably be built around that.

Do get a kick out of being around young people? Then consider working in education. Is the freedom of choosing your own schedule incredibly important to you? Then why not looking into any one of a variety of freelance career options?

Don’t treat this question lightly, think about it very carefully. The last thing that you want to do is end up settling for something that leaves you just as unfulfilled as the job you just left.

What Are You Good At?

One thing that a lot of people struggle to come to terms with is that the thing that they love might not always be the thing that they’re good at. This may seem kind of sad but it’s an incredibly important factor to consider when changing careers.

What are your skills? Does your current job leave you miserable because it’s not using your skillset? Or are you good at what you do but you get no satisfaction from it?

Sure, it’s entirely possible to develop new skills and many people do that all the time. However, there’s no denying that it’s going to be a whole lot easier to find a new career if you choose something that uses skills that you already have. Often, if you follow what you’re good at, you’re likely to find something that you find engaging and fulfilling at the same time.

Do You Need To Re-Train?

So let’s say that you’ve figured out what it is that makes you happy. Now you have to figure out what it is that you can actually commit to if you need to re-train.

Some careers, you can simply move over to with the skills that you have. Others will require a bit more work. If you want to go into something very specific like psychology, then training will be a necessity.

Fortunately, you don’t need to set aside all of your time to achieve this. It’s possible to find places where you can either train from scratch in order to change careers entirely or do something like an online RN MSN which allows you to increase your skills as move upwards in your career without having to stop working.

Sure, there will be some careers that require a lot more training than others, but if you’re determined to find something that really makes you happy, then you may well decide that it’s worth it.

Are You Able To Take A Pay Cut?

Unless the only thing that matters about a job is the salary, there’s a chance that you might find yourself taking a financial hit when you start a new job. Following your passion might improve your life, but you could also end up starting from the bottom and having to work your way up again.

If that’s the case, then you need to ask yourself if you’re able to take that drop in pay. If you have a partner, then make sure to discuss it with them as well. The last thing you want is to find yourself financially crippled by something that was supposed to be a positive force in your life.

Sure, money isn’t everything and it’s entirely reasonable to want to a new career, even if that’s something that’s going to mean that you live under more limited financial circumstances. You just need to be sure that it’s something you’re ready for and that it’s not going to end up making your life even harder than it was before.

The most important thing to remember when considering a change in careers is just how much of a significant change it really is. It’s the kind of thing that can, even if it’s just temporary, throw your life into complete chaos. It may end up making things worse before they get better.

Because of this, you need to be absolutely sure that you’re making the right decision, not just for yourself but for your family as well. After all, the last thing you want is to realize that you hate your new job just as much if not more than the old one. And then find yourself in a hop from job to job just trying to figure out what you want.

Take your time and make sure that a career change really is the right thing for you. Once you’re sure, the most important thing is that you don’t get discouraged, the journey towards a new career may well be a long and difficult one and you need to be able to keep your eyes on the prize, even when the going gets tough.

Yes, you can seek a change in professions at any point in your life, what is key is knowing that whatever you spend most of your time doing, you also find it to be a source of enjoyment, not just monetary compensation. Much success to you.

    Michelle,
I worked for one company for 27 years and climbed the ladder so to speak. When I got up the ladder pretty far, I found out I did not like who I became to get there. I left the company and started somewhere else for less than a third of the money. I was so much happier and worked there for 15 years, even this job became less like I wanted to be when I left. Change is good sometimes in your working career if you plan it out and don’t just jump off a bridge.
I am happy now that I can work when I want and do what I want, my jobs did leave me with a lot of knowledge to work on my own for the rest of my life.

      Hello John,
Thanks for stopping by and leaving your thoughts. Great that you found relevance in this article. Yes, you have to a ‘brave soul’ to leave one job and go ‘out on a limb’ for another that you ‘like’ or at least hope you will. And yes, you are so right – you will have gained so much experience from all the jobs combined and who knows, the experience could be the core of your final ‘passion’/dream job. All the best.
